PREGNANCY APP PROJECT
This is what happens when a business partner convinces an animator she should try creating apps.
What could possibly go wrong?

These days, I work mostly for others.
And that’s ok.
I work on some amazing projects with great, collaborative people. When I left academia in 2013, it was a dream of mine to do this.
Suffice it to say, I consider myself very lucky.
And, beyond any experiment I planned or executed in the ivory tower, any grant I wrote (or revised), any thesis I struggled to put together, or any manuscript I ever prepared and submitted, what you see on these web pages represents the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
I dreamt of spending my days creating content for others. Instead, I spent my first year and a half in this business on the phone and at my computer crafting emails and pitches.
So many emails.
Most of my outreach went unanswered. I worked with a business coach. I changed tactics. I tried again. I made the kind of mistakes newbies dread making – the ones you insist you’ll never make.
I’m still making mistakes.
This path is not for the faint of heart. It took nearly two years in the trenches before I was making any appreciable income. There’ve been plenty of struggles.
I don’t ever make light of how hard this has been or continues to be.
But, some dared pick up the phone to speak with me. And, even if they didn’t have any work for me, they generously gave me their time and shared their experiences. They gave me advice and encouragement.
They know who they are.
Most of the work you see on these pages is a result of some of those earliest conversations. Several other animations have been created. These are mostly outside of science and so aren’t showcased here, but these contacts represent the foundation of my business.
They’re the reason I’m still here.
But, once in a while, I get an opportunity to work on something where I have full creative control and I get to plant myself at the cross section of art, animation and interactivity.
This is one of those times.
Over the coming months, I’ll be working with a partner to create a science app. We’ve had many discussions about what this might look and feel like, and the kinds of content we’d work on. But our first idea, an app detailing the science behind pregnancy is admittedly the result of some (very) embarrassing conversations we’ve had with our own kids over the years. There’s no deadline, and no pressure.
It’ll come together as time allows and will depend on whether we can generate some public interest and feedback.
If the past few years are any indication, this will be as wild a ride as anything I’ve dared take on. I’m certain there’ll be mistakes and plenty of opportunities to fail.
I’m right where I want to be.
Please sign up below. There’s no newsletter yet, but there will be one shortly. It’ll consist mainly of updates and links to products (books, games, websites and anything else) that have served as inspiration thus far. To keep things clean, this project will eventually be moved to its own website. But, this seems like a good place as any to start.
If you’re interested in following along as we build this idea from the ground up, test our creative chops and bring on new partners as the project grows, then we promise to make this process as transparent as possible.
Let the hilarity ensue.
