Ontario Institute for Regenerative Medicine

*Video series*

One pitch competition.

Five winners.

The result is Stem Cells Inked, a series showcasing the research of young scientists across Ontario.  Each video combines live footage and animation to introduce viewers to the complexities of stem cell research.

Scientific American

*Video smorgasbord*

Whether the project starts with a podcast interview, a single research paper or an interesting story, the folks over at Scientific American strive to produce content they feel will be of interest to a wide audience.

Nine collaborations and over 500K views later, here are a few links and lessons from our favorites.

Stem Cell Network

*Customized assets*

With its funding cycle quickly drawing to a close, it was all hands on deck.

There was only one problem – the turn around time had to be blindingly fast.

With no time for animation, what they requested instead was a quick collection of GIFs and banner ads used strategically as part of the network’s funding renewal initiative. With money successfully secured over the next few years, the SCN can breathe a little easier, and get back to the business of being a key player in Canadian stem cell research.

Veterinary Content

*Client education*

These are a sample of assets created for veterinarians to educate their clients.  The challenge is creating media that pet owners will actually consume in today’s busy, mobile environment.

What results is a far cry from the boring printed brochures and PDF articles used in the past.  These images, videos and GIFs are designed as quick awareness campaigns or reminders that it’s time for Fido’s heartworm chewable.

The Science of Pregnancy

*Video mini course concept*

A fresh take on how one might explain what happens during those earliest weeks after conception.

When you take an old topic and present it in a new light, what results is content designed to expose a new audience to some awesome science.

The Next Scientist

*Converting a blog post into an infographic*

That time I summarized my entire stint as a graduate student and research fellow into a single, mind-numbingly depressing flowchart…

That was fun.

The result is a viral op-ed warning students who sometimes feel compelled to stick around in the Ivory Tower just a little too long.

Myths, Lies and the Reptilian Brain

*Using animation to summarize research*

There was no shortage of analogies, myths and opinions pulling this one together but, the wonderful thing about science, is that the research doesn’t lie.

You just need to be willing to dig.

Frankly, the concept of the reptilian brain makes for a great theory and a cool story.

And, after all these years, Sciconic’s first animated feature still generates its share of questions and conversation.

“They did a great job bringing our very limited idea for a video to life.  They were easy to work with and provided great insight into how to make the project better.  It surpassed my expectations and we’ve gathered a lot of praise for the final product.”

Christopher Wynder PhD | Director of Client Services, Thinkdox.com

“I have used Sciconic for several animation and social media projects. They understand what it takes to effectively target an audience and consistently go above and beyond to deliver a fantastic product.”

Lisa Willemse | Senior Communications Consultant

“A great outfit for artistic and elegant animations.  They’re remarkably scientifically accurate and whimsical at the same time.  Sciconic is a great partner for Scientific American and our parent company, Nature Research Group.”

Eliene Augenbraun DO PhD | Multimedia Managing Editor, Nature Research Group
